every girl, no matter who in the world you are, watches the Victoria's Secret fashion show. it's the one time in the year, besides halloween, it's socially acceptable to watch a bunch of girls parade around a runway in their under-roos while wearing wings of some sort. A lot of girls even have parties and dress up in their Vicki's lingerie too... yes I'm guilty! it's fun! not only it is fun, it's a little risque, and no girl can turn that down.
when Lucy Falck and Alex Koutny came in to talk to us, of course they had design and styling background prior to being roped into the Victoria's Secret circle, everyone was most interested in what they had done for the show. what i found to be most interesting and inspiring was the fact that the designers took their ideas for the show from pictures. It was the first time I was actually able to see a line from concept to actual garment, and coming from an art background, that spoke volumes to me. Art has always been a huge part of my life. i've been painting since i could hold a pen and got my first camera at age 6. to this day, i own a huge SLR camera that I hold near and dear to my heart. it's like having a child. i also have multiple digital cameras that I find myself snapping all the time at anyone that will let me get a picture of them.
another thing that was very interesting to me was how much press there really is involved in the show, including during fittings, for how short the show really is. The show is barely a half an hour long, but the designers work about 8 months out. it was also interesting that while Victoria's Secret is always producing lingerie, none of what is produced for the show will ever land in consumer's hands, but the show still gets millions of viewers each and every year without fail. the fittings, which one might think would be of most importance to gauge the fit of the clothes on the models were really just big press releases for hype and the fit of the garment usually came second best to the snapping cameras and models.
fashion in and of itself is quite a crazy unique world, and getting the backstage information from Lucy and Alex made me realize how little we really know about such a big big show in the lives of so many people. Can't wait until November to see what garments will take over the Victoria's Secret runway this year, and from now on I'll be watching the shows with much different eyes.
